CHAPTER 14

Silvery moonlight tumbled through the glass-dome ceiling to illuminate the labyrinth of shelves within the Dream Library. Normally, the abundance of information contained within their pages symbolized promise, but after hours of carefully perusing their contents, the vast array of knowledge only felt overwhelming. In the week following Summer’s pronouncement about our poisoned relationship, Darius and I had spent every spare moment that Trinity allowed me to sneak away to meet him within these walls, searching every volume we could find for the solutions we desperately sought…yet they remained elusive.

Stardust floated above to search the highest shelves while Darius and I combed the lower ones. We’d been reluctant to split up, both because we treasured each other’s presence even more now since we better understood the costly sacrifice for our connection and because we were reluctant to leave the other alone. Our poisoned pairing contained an abundance of mysteries, leaving us uncertain about what could potentially happen.

Several fruitless hours had already passed. At first it’d only been me and Stardust while Darius attended his Weaving; he’d joined us shortly after finishing, much earlier than usual. One look at the disappointment tightening his expression had informed me that he’d once more lost, a devastating blow given our depleted magic.

Since learning of our condition, Darius had attempted to weave nightmares for me in hopes of replenishing our powers, only to realize he didn’t have enough intrinsic magic even for that.

Shade had offered to lend us some, but her kindness had been wasted when we learned dream dust couldn’t replenish our intrinsic powers once they’d been depleted by the poison. Ever since this discovery, we’d scarcely used our magic at all, reserving every last grain of power for when we needed to stop Mother…if we could ever figure out a plan to do so.

I didn’t ask Darius if he’d lost; the falter in his usual confidence already confirmed the outcome of last night’s Weaving. I knew my Pair well enough to know his pride would never allow him to admit what had happened, so I simply reached for his hand and intertwined our fingers.

I’m sorry— he began.

There’s no need to apologize. But admittedly, I was growing increasingly worried. He hadn’t won a Weaving ever since he’d expended so much magic to rescue me from that nightmare the week before. Guilt at being the cause for his current predicament slithered into the recesses of my heart. It took great effort to push it away before it could take root.

As always, helping you was worth it. I’m so glad you’re safe. His whisper to my mind contained layers of meaning—he cared more for me than the glory and magic that came from winning Weavings.

The memory of that nightmare had haunted me ever since, curling its tendrils around every thought, no matter how much I tried to suppress it. What could have given it power strong enough to trap both me and that Mortal within it? It was yet another unresolved riddle to add to the mysteries surrounding us.
